I'm a guy, maybe not the target demographic, but I loved this book! Lucy, cute college chick, falls for Stephen, who is a . . . psychopath. Not the Freddie, knife wielding type, but a guy who feels little emotion ("I learned to simulate emotion as circumstances required") and who is expert at emotional manipulation. The book is in the first person, from BOTH Lucy and Stephen's perspective, so the reader gets each situation from both sides. What guy can't relate, at least to some extent, to Stephen? And what woman to Lucy? The story is fascinating, thought-provoking, and the writing is taut, fun and a pleasure to read. Definite book group material.

Tell Me Lies A Novel edition by Carola Lovering Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I actually really liked the premise of this story. I think we've all been guilty of loving the idea of someone verses seeing who they actually are -- not to Lucy's extreme, but the narrative is still relatable. However, it was hard for me to find anyone to like or root for in this book. Stephen, obviously, was just a terrible human being but honestly Lucy wasn't that much better. By the end I was over both of them because they were both so terrible to themselves and to the people around them.
I'm all for the slow burn, the careful, winding, tip-toeing into development of character, plot, nuance...I'm here for all of it, which is why I crept my way through chapters of Lucy's poor decisions, emotional vapidity and seriously lack of friendship (why do those girls still like her?) to say nothing of baby Patrick Bateman's somehow implausible hold on seemingly intelligent women. Glacier pace aside, what had me flinging this book across the room was that after CHAPTERS of breathy looks, deep stares, smoldering glaces and laborious sex scenes - everything is tidied up in a few pages. **SPOILERS AHEAD** "Sorry I threw away your priceless family jewels, mom!" It's cool - let's go get breakfast! "(WHAT?!) "Hey guy I threw away my college career for, I see you now and I realize that you're totally not a great guy but after 6 years - one look had me convinced! " (WHAT?!) "Oh and you murdered that girl (I know, I got a message from beyond) Oh well, now you know I know and I guess that's cool, guess noone will ever know you're a murderer!" And seriously...who calls their mother to gab and discuss major life changes AT THEIR BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING.
See Lucy is a terrible friend. I had high hopes, but the ending was flatter than Lucy's abs after her daily hot yoga class (and yeah, we get it, she was painfully thin).
This book is about a relationship that starts in college and ends after. Supposedly the love of her life, it's a little over the top. I wish it bounced more in the present and less in how their relationship started, ended, etc. What are they both doing now? Who is the fiance? Is he ever going to come to terms with his emotional distance? Or is this just a snapshot in time that goes nowhere? If the book was a past, present, future story, I would have liked it more. Too much emotional garbage....
Lucy Albright is far from her Long Island upbringing when she arrives on the campus of her small California college, and happy to be hundreds of miles from her mother, whom she’s never forgiven for an act of betrayal in her early teen years. Quickly grasping at her fresh start, Lucy embraces college life and all it has to offer—new friends, wild parties, stimulating classes. And then she meets Stephen DeMarco. Charming. Attractive. Complicated. Devastating.

Confident and cocksure, Stephen sees something in Lucy that no one else has, and she’s quickly seduced by this vision of herself, and the sense of possibility that his attention brings her. Meanwhile, Stephen is determined to forget an incident buried in his past that, if exposed, could ruin him, and his single-minded drive for success extends to winning, and keeping, Lucy’s heart.

Lucy knows there’s something about Stephen that isn’t to be trusted. Stephen knows Lucy can’t tear herself away. And their addicting entanglement will have consequences they never could have imagined.

My Thoughts Tell Me Lies sweeps back and forth through time but begins in the present with Lucy Albright attending the wedding of one of her best friends from college. She is living in Manhattan, but her thoughts on this day take her back to her college years in California.

Lucy and Stephen had one of those relationships that never seemed to progress. They couldn’t seem to stay together for various reasons, but they couldn’t stay apart, either.

What drew them together? What kept them apart? Their inability to make the relationship work or stay away from each other kept me frustrated on their behalf.

They each had issues from the past that factored into their mishaps with one another, and these problems were severe enough that they seemed doomed to never have what they wanted from each other. As the story unfolded, and each narrator shared moments that had affected them, it was easy to see that the patterns of behavior were deeply entrenched, and the traumas of the past had contributed in some way. One shocking event from the past was revealed near the end and made the story feel climactic.

I found each of these characters frustrating and hoped that they would eventually manage to move on. But I was also curious enough to keep reading. I did enjoy how the author added that unique flavor of each setting, from LA to Manhattan, allowing the reader to experience the moments with the characters tasting the hot dogs or the drinks, feeling the ambience of the various bars and restaurants, and seeing the interiors of the apartments and homes. A slower read than I usually choose, but in the end, it was enjoyable. 4 stars.
